How to Create Partition on Windows 10?

How to Create Partition on Windows 10?

Having a configuration of multiple hard drives without going through the box purchase and installation of additional hardware is made possible with hard disk partitioning. It is an operation that allows you to have several sections on your disk and that confers multiple advantages to the user. All Windows operating systems allow their users to split a hard drive into multiple partitions.

Why create partitions on a hard disk?

A partition is a section of the hard disk that can accommodate a file system. When partitioning is done, the different sections are created on a single disk. By doing so, each part can function independently as if it were a separate disk. There are many reasons to turn to disk partitioning. Among the most common is the desire to install multiple operating systems on a single device. Creating partitions on a hard drive can also be useful in case the user wants to see a separate system on one section and a data directory for software management on another.

Be careful, creating partitions on a hard disk requires a minimum of available space. This is because partitions themselves consume the disk's storage volume. So remember to free up space on your hard drive before you start creating partitions!

How to create partitions on a hard drive in Windows 10: what are the different types of partition?

Before embarking on partitioning a hard disk, a user should know that there are different types of partitions:

The primary partition is the one that will host the installation of the operating system (Windows). An MBR-type hard drive can hold up to 4 primary partitions.

To resolve the limitation of primary partitions, an extended partition can be created. It can accommodate unlimited logical units. Each can function as a separate piece of hardware.

For example, a terabyte hard drive might contain a 500 gigabyte primary partition, and a 500 gigabyte extended partition containing five units about 100 gigabytes logical.

How to Create Partitions on a Hard Drive in Windows 10: The Benefits of Partitioning a Hard Drive

Hard disk partitioning is commonly used to separate the user's file system files, which allows for fast hard drive formatting and operating system re-installation without the need to back up the contents of a large hard drive. Creating partitions on a hard disk helps protect your data in the event of a computer failure. In short, if the operating system is damaged due to a software malfunction, and it cannot back up data, it will not be affected if it is on another partition.

How to Partition Hard Drive in Windows 10 in Steps

Before embarking on the partitioning of a hard disk, the user must first pay attention to the number of partitions. For example, if the hard drive in Windows 10 is of type MBR (Master Boot Record), the maximum number of supported partitions is 4 (4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition). On the other hand, there is no limitation if the hard disk is GPT (GUID Partition Table).

Partitioning a hard drive in Windows 10 is a simple process to say the least thanks to the Disk Management tool built into the operating system. The steps to follow are as follows:

Right-click on the Start menu and then choose Disk Management.

Windows Disk Manager displays the different disks and partitions on the computer.

  • Select the available space to partition

  • Right-click and select "new simple volume"

  • Adjust the size of your partition

The last window summarizes everything that will happen on your computer it will format a volume of about 459808MB
